A Thoughtful Approach to Bowel Health

A colonoscopy (camera test) is an effective way to investigate symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, abdominal discomfort or rectal bleeding. Early assessment can offer reassurance or help identify issues.

What is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the lining of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It involves the use of a thin, flexible tube with a small camera at the tip, which allows the consultant to view the inside of the bowel in detail.

This investigation is often recommended to help diagnose:

  • Rectal bleeding

  • Unexplained changes in bowel habits

  • Persistent abdominal discomfort

  • A family history of bowel cancer or polyps

During the procedure, small samples (biopsies) can be taken for testing.

The procedure is usually performed under light sedation, takes around 15-30 minutes, and is carried out as a day case, meaning most patients go home on the same day.

Most patients experience only mild discomfort, and preparation and recovery are well-supported by the clinical team.

When a Colonoscopy May Be Recommended

A colonoscopy may be advised to investigate:

  • Rectal bleeding

  • Unexplained change in bowel habit

  • Positive FIT test (hidden blood in the stool)

  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating

  • Personal or family history of bowel conditions, including cancer

Each consultation begins with a careful review of your symptoms and medical history and only the appropriate investigations are recommended.
